8-1-2: HelloFresh

As mentioned in a previous blog, I decided to try out meal prep kits. HelloFresh was the first to deliver this week. I got home to a beautiful box of food on my front porch in the rocking chair. My first thought after seeing the box, "Thank God I don't have to go shopping!" Only by the prospect of not having to shop, I'm excited.
I take the box in the kitchen, open it up and pull everything out. The first impression, I like the way they have everything separated into neat bags. I put those in the fridge, and realize there is something else underneath. It is the meats. Now, here is where I was a little disgusted. The outside of the bag was slimy. The meat looked to be fine, but I guess from the travel the condensation made them slimy. I wipe them off and put them in the fridge, and head over to the recipes to decide what I want to cook tonight. I decided on Crushed Peppercorn Steak, steak fries, and creamy kale.

I read all the directions and started cooking. There wasn't much cutting involved, and the instructions were simple enough to follow. I will say, they don't include basic kitchen staples such as olive oil or butter. Luckily, I had both. After maybe about 30-40 minutes of prepping and cooking, I was finished. I plated my dinner, and put my husband's in a Tupperware for him the next night. The hubs works nights, so he gets the meal a day late; too bad he doesn't get to enjoy it right off the stove.
Once I had stored his plate, it was time for me to enjoy. I tasted the kale first. I've only had kale once, and it has been so long I honestly couldn't remember the way it was supposed to taste. It was good; however, I'm unsure if I cooked it long enough. I did skip the water step, so that may have caused my kale to be a little bit tougher than it should have been. I won't make that mistake again. The fries were perfect; I did add a little garlic powder to them to give them a little spunk. The steak was delicious, and the sauce? I may have licked my plate clean. Whatever, I was at home alone.

Current rating, three out of five stars. This rating could change since this is just one meal. I still have two more meals, which are Chopped Chicken Thigh Tacos and Sesame Sirachca Beef Stir-Fry. I plan on making the tacos tonight.
I am not entirely sold on HelloFresh yet, but that is because I've only had one meal and I have two other meal kit delivery services to go. One downside is they only provide three meals. If I like these services, I need at LEAST 6 meals/week. That is how much I hate to shop. We shall see. Overall impression of a meal kit delivery service, TAKE MY MONEY!!!!!
Home Chef delivers on Saturday, so I'll be writing about them Monday hopefully. Until then, Bon Appetit!
